One can think back to the architectural and spiritual legacy of Lyons and Paterson, Gaetano Federici and Southern Italy, or today to the Peru Fest, and fabulous cuisine and bakeries of the Arab-American community on the South side, or be nostalgic for Lou Costello, the old and now new Fabian Theatre (s).
One can still see the ever present Falls, even better after a rain storm, or hear the text of William Carlos Williams' PATERSON, or HOWL at the Storm via Ginsberg, but their poetry has now become part of the Literary fabric of Paterson.
And speaking of fabric, we return to the silk mills, the upcoming Centennial moments of the 1911 Triangle Shirt Waist Fire which helped fuel the 1913 strike in Paterson, and the ascendancy of the Botto House and its ascendancy into history, and the labor movement, benefiting all immigrants (somewhat akin to the passage of Obama's Health bill.).
Or one can be blinded by the insolence of the powers that be that Paterson belongs to them or someone else, and is not the symbol of a shared cultural legacy. Some things have happened in Paterson over the last 30 years that have been restored to vigorous life, others still await as a pile of ruins. Everywhere there is factional infighting. Let there be Peace at last and let in begin as Paterson moves toward becoming a National Park fulfilling the august dreams of Alexander Hamilton, and the legacies of the industrialists from Catholina Lambert to William Hobart

Years ago, I saw a dreadful production at the Abbey to an almost empty theatre, and then a disappointing versiion of The Bacchae, sort of reset in Baghdad, but it didn't quite work. I appeared in Limerick when I was doing a mini-book tour in 2005/06 during February/March and took the train to Dublin, so now I understand the relative size of the country vis-avis the usa... Jim Sheridan is a friend of mine from NYC who founded the Project Arts Center, but we have been out of touch recently...
Even when I lived in Dublin, I spent more time talking about going to productions than actually getting my ass in gear - The Abbey is world class when it wants to be - there is huge depth for a small city with Project Arts Theatre putting in over 25 years of pushing the envelope.
Si parlo Italiano, un po di Francese e Spagnolo.
