One of the biggest problems I see in the speaking industry is that speakers do not have a properly built business backend to leverage their speaking careers.
G;enn,
That's quite a teaser headline you have there!
I would have to agree this is true. Most people who speak, like to speak, they don't like to do some of the nitty gritty stuff that could really launch or maintain a career. Those that do, often reap the benefits.
I would like to see you elaborate on your premise.
Hi Dan...you bet. I see too many speakers who simply do not understand business. They have a glorified job where many have been trained to follow another educational system that causes what I term, 'regression to the mean.' This thinking begins with the school system that teaches--from those who have never made it in the market place by the way--a system of thinking that is totally apposed to teaching students sales and marketing. (One's twin tickets to freedom, by the way.)
This thinking is pervasive in speaking organizations such as Toastmasters, NSA, and CAPS (in Canada) for example. In fact, when I was in Toastmasters--I only joined to hear myself talk about my business--the unwritten rule seemed to be that before you could make money, one must complete the CTM and DTM curriculum. Upon completion, one has then earned the 'right' to begin to make money speaking.
The few that actually do begin speaking for money, far underappreciate their value. But worst yet, most end trading time for money with no way to leverage the speaking event.
Incidentally, I did not begin speaking until I had an established business that could grow without me being present. This allows me to use speaking venues as gateways to strategic partnerships, consultations into high end programs and services etc.
Thanks for your comments. Or perhaps another way of saying this is that every entrepreneur should build multiple streams of income off one's business idea by strategically repurposing one's material!
New blog set up to help speakers. coaches, authors and entrepreneurs sell high priced programs.
Here is the number one business coaching training problem that people face today when it comes to evaluating their information and how to strategically position themselves in a day and age of over-communication: over-thinking everything.
I can certainly relate to this problem as I was once a Vice Principal following so many so-called gurus and experts which only made me more confused. This ultimately led me into over-thinking everything. To top that off, even though I spent tens of thousands of dollars in hiring business coaches, no one showed me how to create and sell high priced program quickly.
I welcome you to discover a new strategic system of business acceleration designed to help you execute right now using a new advanced teaching and learning technology...
Instead of putting all your efforts in finding speaking opportunities, I recommend you focus on building your business. That's not to say that you should not go after speaking engagements, but they are only one income stream.
Build a solid business that will grow even when you travel and have engagements. Don't get roped in depending on speaking for your income--this is a fatal flaw of most speakers today in my experience.
I am just back from speaking in Orlando before I leave for LV and my business continues to grow. I am certainly nobody special--I used to be a Vice Principal (don't hold that against me!)--but I do have a system that teaches how to build your backend quickly. It all begins by creating your own strategic design model that looks liks the file I am attaching. This is the most 'stolen' piece of proprietary material that occurs where ever I go--more than my books, CDs, DVDs etc. (You don't get rich with them by the way so don't be fooleed into thinking you have to have a whole curriculum line.)
See the attached file as example of what a Strategic Design Model looks like to help position your business backend.
You know the funny thing is that I never joined any of those groups such as toastmaster and others (nothing against them from my standpoint), yet I been able to obtain speaking engagements just from word of mouth alone. I never thought I'd become a motivational speaker, but when I realize I had a gift to inspire people I found myself speaking more and more. So the more I speak the more I am learning this is a business and that is one reason I joined this website, because I am learning more about the business side of the speaking from all this great wealth of information that is posted on speakersite.com. This site has truly been helpful in teaching me how to market myself better, because remember all of my gigs have come from word of mouth and not me promoting myself.
Just remember that you can't reap a harvest if you sow your seed on bad ground, so Learn the business aspect of speaking!
The only reason I joined Toastmasters was to hear myself talk about my business.
This is a powerful strategy to help wrt strategically positioning one's business.
The critical element in positioning is to ensure that you perfectly message-to-market match what you...and this needs to be aligned with the negative perception that your ideal clients have of your competitors.
