SpeakerSite

The SpeakerSite technology platform works great for social networking.

But Nothing's Perfect
Here's the #1 complaint: "Hey! I'm getting too much email from SpeakerSite. Every time anyone joins a group, or leaves a comment, or just about anything happens — I get an email. How can I stop receiving so much email?"

It's true. If you don't change the initial default settings, you will quickly receive a lot of email (every day) from SpeakerSite. It comes whenever there is activity in your groups, on your blogs, on your proflle, in your discussions — it can quickly be much too much email.

To change the settings, take a moment to:

1. Change your email account settings.

Our recommendation: if you want the minimum amount, limit your email to only the weekly all-SpeakerSite email from Rob or Artie. (We promise never to send more than one all-network email per week. Artie once sent two in one day and several folks said, "No! Bad Artie!"). To do this, make sure none of the boxes are checked except the two that are checked in the picture above. (Click on the picture to enlarge.) Be certain to click "SAVE" at the bottom of the email settings page.

But that is not enough! You will also want to:

2. Change whether you "follow" the activity in your groups, blogs and forum discussions. On each of those pages, there is an opportunity to click "stop following." Or, if you ever want to immediately "stop following" all conversations, you can return to the email settings page and click on the "Clear My Follow List" box. Again, be certain to click "SAVE" at the bottom of the email settings page.

These are the ways to relieve you of too much email.

It's far from perfect. Over time, we will work to improve this. For now, it's difficult for the technology to balance the wide variety of preferences that each of us has. Some of us want everything. Some want nothing. And most of us want to pick and choose.

It makes for a little work. Please don't be discouraged!

Artie:

I continue to click "stop following" in all of my groups -- as I do not need to know who has joined and the specific comments. I prefer to visit the groups periodically to see the comments. However, my settings are not being saved for the groups. I continue to get these emails, and when I return, "follow" is set. For some reason, the "groups" aren't saving these settings. I'm now getting about 40-50 emails each day from the few groups I belong to. This is a little crazy!

Let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if there are other settings I need to check.

Thanks!

Todd

Artie, may I offer a tip for those users who haven't quite tuned their preferences as they want them but don't want to be bombarded in the meantime...

If you use Outlook as your email client then first create a folder to hold messages like these. (I have one into which I stuff all the messages I get from SpeakerSite, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter .. I know, I know!).

Next time a message arrives from SpeakerSite open it and click on the button marked "Create Rule". Then simply click the options you want so that any more messages from the same source get put in your holding folder to read at a later time. If you're feeling smarter then you can also create a rule to delete messages in this folder that are older than a couple of days.

This technique gives you the best of all worlds and works even if there is something you've forgotten to configure to "OFF". You can still browse the messages later if you want, but equally they don't clutter up your Inbox.

Kindest regards
Christine
